Bela Wiertz

Bela Wiertz works for a German family office that invests in VC funds and early-stage startups, with a dedicated focus on open-source data, AI, and developer tooling companies. His day-to-day work sits at the intersection of venture capital and the open-source ecosystem: sourcing promising projects, evaluating their commercial potential, and working closely with open-source companies in the early stages of finding their product-community fit.

Because open-source businesses monetize in unusual ways, Bela has built deep due diligence experience that goes beyond standard startup metrics. He screens GitHub repositories, interviews the developers who actually use the tools, and reads community engagement signals that star counts alone cannot capture. He also follows the commercialization paths open to open-source companies, including open-core offerings, hosted services, enterprise licensing, and support-based revenue, along with how funding dynamics play out for European open-source startups from angel through seed stages.

Through this work, Bela has developed a broad view of the open-source developer tools landscape and of what separates communities that grow into durable companies from projects that never find their market.
