Yulia Pavlova is a Senior Data Scientist on the Applied Innovation team at Reuters News, where she brings artificial intelligence to one of the world’s leading news agencies. Based in Toronto, Canada, her work focuses on AI applications in the news and media industry: extracting insights from video and image content, building continuous speech transcription, and creating customized captioning solutions that help news content reach wider audiences faster and more accessibly.
Her background combines serious scientific depth with hands-on applied machine learning. Yulia holds a Ph.D. in Scientific Computing from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland and a Ph.D. in Discrete Mathematics and Cybernetics from St. Petersburg University in Russia. Before joining Reuters, she worked on big data analytics and computer vision applications in wildlife monitoring, teaching models to help observe and protect animal populations, a field where noisy field data and real-world constraints leave no room for sloppy engineering.
Yulia also shares her knowledge as an educator, serving as an Adjunct Professor in Environmental Economics at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Across newsrooms, nature reserves, and lecture halls, her work has a common thread: applying rigorous computer vision and data science to problems that matter.
