Max Schultze is a data engineering manager working on building a data lake at Zalando, Europe’s biggest online platform for fashion. His focus lies on data pipelines at petabyte scale and on productionizing Spark and Presto on Delta Lake inside the company, work that sits at the heart of keeping one of Europe’s largest e-commerce platforms data-driven.

Max is a public advocate of the Data Mesh paradigm and contributes to its development through conference appearances and online trainings, helping data engineering teams think differently about ownership, domain boundaries, and scalable data architectures.

Max originally graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin, where he actively took part in the university’s initial development of Apache Flink, one of the most widely used stream processing engines in the data world. That early exposure to distributed data systems set the foundation for a career spent building large-scale data platforms and leading the engineers who run them.
